Interview with Padel NEXT' interior designer

Congratulations with your nomination Interior of the Year 2022!
What was your original vision when designing Padel NEXT?

My original vision for Padel NEXT was to design a padel club that is more than just a sports club. A club that stands out, where people enjoy coming and staying, and where they are pleasantly surprised. Moreover, a padel club that isn’t only about padel, but also a place that is appealing for its aesthetics – for example, for photoshoots or an Instagram-worthy location.

What were the key elements or feelings you wanted to evoke when someone walks into the club?
With the design, I wanted to evoke the WOW factor. Not boring, but EXCITING! 'I feel like playing padel!

How has the sport of padel itself influenced your interior design choices?
Padel originates from Mexico. That was the starting point for the design – Mexico. The colors speak for themselves, but it’s also reflected in structural choices like open arches instead of doors, inspired by Mexican haciendas. Additionally, there are cacti and murals – all keeping the Mexican roots in mind.

Padel NEXT clearly stands out from other padel clubs – what makes the interior design so different?
The colors are definitely bold. Moreover, we made design choices based on the concept, not necessarily on the sport of padel itself. The quality of the materials was a priority for Padel NEXT, which resulted in a sleek and striking interior design.

Are there any unconventional design choices you made that you feel have really paid off?
Besides the arches, I think the pink courts are crucial for our design as a WOW padel club. We couldn’t find any other club with pink courts – so that really makes Padel NEXT unique! The pink courts are now perfect for women’s events (cliché as that may sound). They also attract brands and partners for striking photoshoots or TV commercials. Plus, people enjoy playing on a different kind of court and capturing an Instagram-worthy shot.

Do you think good interior design can actually influence how people play, feel, or connect in a sports environment?
Good interior design can absolutely lift your mood. The moment you step into Padel NEXT, you’re immediately stimulated by the lighting design in the entrance tunnel. The bold and striking colors give you a fresh and cheerful feeling to start a game. Just try it for yourself!
